What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that raises the top lip to achieve a more attractive, sensual, and youthful appearance. It also makes the top lip look fuller, as it shows more of the underside and exposes the upper teeth in an attractive way.

How a Lip Lift Works

The surgery removes a very small area of skin just beneath the nose, which results in the philtrum becoming shortened. This slightly “pulls up” on the upper lip, making it appear fuller and more aesthetically pleasing. A lip lift is an excellent option for those who want to improve their lips but prefer to not use fillers or lip implants; however, it can also be used in conjunction with these procedures.

General background

I went to Dr. G on referral. I’m so glad I did! Not only an expert at what he does, he has a great bedside manner…courteous, caring, and gentle. He gives honest answers, explains all the options, and still lets you make the final decision. The staff is super fabulous too! As a medical professional myself, I highly recommend Dr. G!

How is a Lip Lift Different than Lip Augmentation?

While many people confuse these two procedures, they are different.

In a lip augmentation, the size of the lips is actually enhanced. This is either done either using lip filler injections with temporary results, or fat transfer or lip implants with more long-lasting results.

A lip lift is a surgery that slightly lifts the upper lip, with permanent results. The lip is not actually made bigger; it just appears bigger. Many patients who choose a lip lift do so because they want a prettier, more youthful contour for their lips that is permanent and natural.

Lip Lift Surgery Details

Before a lip lift, you should stop taking any blood thinners for two weeks prior. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia, which many patients appreciate. Dr. G will create an incision along the base of the nose, where it will be essentially invisible once healed. He will then raise the skin, which causes the center, right, and left of the upper lip to raise. This creates a fuller, poutier, more sensuous appearance to the lips, with more defined lip borders and exposure of the edges of the upper teeth. Dr. G will then close the incision. The lip lift takes approximately one hour.

Lip Lift Recovery

The sutures to close the incision will need to remain for about one week, which is how long recovery typically takes. During this first week, we encourage you to refrain from “overusing” your face. This means trying not to make large expressions that may disrupt healing, such as wide yawns, big laughs, etc. Swelling may last up to one month, and you may experience other side effects such as bruising, redness, or a tight or “pulling” sensation in the treated area. If you’re concerned about any of these side effects, please bring them up during your consultation with Dr. G.
