General background

How Fractora Works

When performed by itself, microneedling alone gets amazing results. When combined with radiofrequency energy, the results are enhanced even more.

Microneedling works by using tiny needles—microneedles—to puncture the skin’s surface, which eventually causes the skin to remodel and renew itself.

Your body’s immune system is triggered by these tiny punctures to make brand-new collagen, which makes the skin look firmer, thicker, smoother, healthier, and more youthful. The result is better-looking skin, with less visible wrinkles and pigmentation.

When radiofrequency is introduced to this process, even more collagen is created. The radiofrequency energy heats the deep layers of the skin in a controlled way to revitalize the collagen. This makes an even a bigger injury, thereby stimulating an even bigger injury repair process. This means elevated collagen production.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before your Fractora treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed and we will apply a topical numbing cream to your skin to help numb the area. Dr. G may also place nerve blocks with local anesthetic—very much like a visit to the dentist—in order to make it more comfortable for you to get a more thorough treatment. Once your skin is properly numbed, we will remove the topical cream. Dr. G will determine the ideal depth of the microneedles, and the Fractora hand-held device will then begin to “stamp” the treatment area, pushing microneedles into the skin and delivering radiofrequency heat energy with each stamping motion. Two passes are typically performed in order to evenly treat layers of skin and to ensure that collagen production is kick-started in all the right places. Treatments take approximately 30-45 minutes, and 1-4 sessions are usual, depending on your skin’s condition and your goals.

Downtime and Results

Although there is no physical downtime with Fractora skin resurfacing, your skin will be affected, so there will be some social downtime if you don’t want people to see your skin as it’s healing.

For 3-7 days, your skin will appear red/splotchy, and it will also become dry and flaky. You may also have some swelling, and you’ll also probably see grid marks from the Fractora device for a day or two.

You will not be able to wear makeup during this time, as your pores will be very open, and makeup would clog the pores and interfere with the healing process and results. for the first 72 hours, we recommend only using water to wash your face. A post-operative healing serum, such as ZO® Firming Serum or Growth Factor Serum, is typically used to soothe the skin and promote skin contraction. You will need to wear sunscreen outdoors.

Some results can be seen or felt instantly—such as a softness—but final results will be apparent at two weeks, with improvement from the collagen growth lasting for months.
